Maintaining this higher grade average can be difficult in CS as there are many challenging courses. Students who see their GPA slipping or who struggle with the Math and Programming classes would be better advised to transfer out of CS if they see it difficult to maintain that grade average. With 50-100 applicants for each job position employers often will have many graduates with a 4.0 average GPA to choose from. If you graduate with a 2.4 or 2.8 GPA it will probably impact the types and size of companies where you can find employment. The aerospace company where I work has a 3.0-3.5 minimum GPA requirement. It used to be 3.5 and they recently lowered the bar to 3.0.

Many CS students find themselves not enjoying programming, not being gifted at it or not having the math and logic skills to be good at programming and they will switch out into CIS. CS majors that are able to graduate can also qualify for jobs listed below under CIS – jobs like Computer Security, Networking or Systems/Database Administration.

Another different IT related degree choice is Computer Information Systems (CIS) which involves less Math and Programming. So without dwelling on the GPA discussion too much – In spite of the overall “on paper” superiority of a CS major, if you have a CS degree with a 2.4 GPA that you struggled through you might find it infinitely more difficult to find a job than if you were a CIS major with a 3.4 GPA.

You can also buy a different quieter fan for your computer as well. Search for a portable wifi router that operates on GSM or UMTS technology. AT&T makes some and i think AT&T equipment is compatable worldwide. They charge in the united states $35/month for 3 GB of data traffic.

The above is if you want to connect several devices to the internet.

You could also get a usb wireless broadband modem for your laptop (i am assuming you have a laptop or netbook) make sure that it uses gsm or umts technology.

In a pinch you could use a cell phone as a tethered modem for your portable computer, but i don’t exactly know the speed of transmissions and the cost probably outweighs the usefulness.

In some cases, we do find artifacts which indicate a higher level of skill than current or modern techniques. Ancient swords from Greece or Japan, India, etc..have metallurgy we cannot or have not duplicated today but those ancient craftsman spent far more time in trial and error refining methods than we do today. And ancient people did not have cell phones, cars ,radio, TV, computer chips, etc.. So it’s arguable who has a higher technology.

Still…for 300 years, no one could figure out how Stradivarius built violins, etc.. With methods others could not duplicate to get the same tonal quality. Indeed, his instruments can fetch prices over a million dollars.
In 2011, his “Lady Blunt” violin from 1721, which is in pristine condition, was sold at Tarisio auctions for £9.8 million, or about $15.9 million. Yet all attempts by numerous other instrument makers at figuring out his methods failed to duplicate his work…..the types of wood, chemical soaking, the varnish, the placement of holes, etc.. It’s now thought by some people that the secret was that he soaked the wood for the soundbox in water prior to construction which expelled oils in the wood and opened up the pores…a simple yet effective technique by a master who spent years refining his craft.

We also find that some ancient methods to build the Parthenon were quite simple yet produced very close tolerances in fitting stone blocks. In modern reconstructions, a heavy metal plate with holes in it is rotated on the surface of a column drum to level it, sand is poured into the holes to act as an abrasive and workers can achieve tolerances of 1/20th of a millimeter using such simple methods which were copied from the original construction methods. Those were in turn were possibly copied from earlier methods used to build the Egyptian pyramids and achieve close fits with stone blocks. Evidences in Peru indicate they used polished metal mirrors to focus sunlight and soften/melt or vitrify rocks to achieve close fits.

We also find thousands of extremely hard diorite or granite bowls and vases in pyramid or tomb sites from ancient Egypt and evidences that they employed methods to drill, machine and lathe very hard rocks with diamond tipped drills or lathes. I personally think they used stone ball bearings or cylindrical rollers in moving heavy stone blocks during pyramid or temple constructions and the balls or cylinders were re-purposed afterwards to create the numerous bowls or vases found in great quantities. Some 40,000 objects were found in just one site. This might have been intentional to coverup their construction techniques or just after the fact to reuse the balls or cylinders to create other objects…why waste them ? Stone balls or marbles have been found in numerous other cultures and megalithic sites such as near Stonehenge, South America, China, etc..and some have asserted that Stonehenge was built using stone balls to move large blocks.
The largest stone ever moved was in 1700′s Russia called the Thunderstone weighing 1500 tons and it was moved entirely by human power, capstan winches and metal spheres/ball bearings.

These are just some examples where ancient people used methods which were simple yet achieved results and shows that the ancients were highly skilled and patient in performing technical feats with a great deal of trial and error and using the simplest methods possible.No aliens needed. We also find numerous evidences that common building techniques were used in Egypt, South America, Easter Island and Cambodia, etc..and other evidences of trade or contact between many ancient cultures indicating transoceanic travel and shared knowledge in ancient times..

Hopefully they will come back and be affordable in the near future as battery technology improves, but here is the run down on why they were only concepts or projects:

1 – Battery packs weigh 1000 pounds
2 – Batteries lose full capacity after only 2-3 years
3 – Even with 1000 pounds, range was either 40 miles at 80 mph, or 80 miles at 40 mph. Neither made anyone happy.
4 – “Filling up the tank” took 8-10 hours (recharging)
5 – Battery replacement cost every few years was hundreds of $$
6 – Car cost was twice that of a gas car
7 – Batteries took up the whole car’s cargo space

However I am part of an EV club myself, and between lithium ion technology and ultra capacators, we should see an affordable one in about 10 years or so. Maybe sooner. The Tesla electric uses 6,000 lithium ion computer batteries and is already under a hundred thousand. $95,000.00 I think. $45,000 just for the replacement battery pack though. Give it time and it will come down.

In the meantime, get a diesel and run B100 biodiesel or get a used Hybrid. Hybrids fix all these problems because the battery pack (cost) can be very small, yet you still can go 300 miles without stopping.

It really depends on what you are looking for in a browser. Internet Explorer has been around for ages, and has the full support of Microsoft behind it. It’s got over 70% of the market share and as a result is recognisable to almost everybody. It is sleek and powerful, but on old(ish) computers that may slow you down a bit. Still, as the standard browser, you won’t find many other negatives with it.

Mozilla FireFox is a highly customizable browser. It has the advantage of being the one of only browsers that is compatible with all operating systems. Although it slows the computer down, it isn’t as bad as IE, though on a fast computer, you won’t notice much of a difference between the two.

Other options available are Opera Browser. This browser offers very limited customization features (only a colour change in fact), but because of this gives very fast browsing. It was mainly developed for low memory computers, and is more of an “Internet Suite” than just a browser. It provides users with the tools and technology to perform a wide variety of internet related tasks like viewing web pages, searching the Internet, sending and receiving emails, conducting online chats, and even displaying the latest Widgets. It doesn’t require as many resources as IE or FF, but it isn’t very fun to browse in something that looks as out-of-date as it does.

The final major browser is Apple Safari. In my opinion it is the fastest of the 4 browser and my personal favourite. Its style is based on the iTunes layout and it doesn’t offer any customizability, but if you like iTunes, you’ll love this browser. Its major downfall is the fact that it doesn’t render (load) webpages very well. This can become very irritating while browsing so most people don’t give it a second thought. It has many of the same features as IE and Firefox, including: QuickTime multimedia technology, a tabbed-browsing interface system, and internet searching tools. It does run very fast (even on slow computers) and has the best startup time of all browsers. If you find that the pages you usually visit work fine on Safari, you won’t have anything bad to say about it.

A new introduction to the Browser market is Google Chrome, Google’s first attempt at an internet browser. It is currently in a beta version, but it seems to be one of the fastest browsers out there. But, as it is still in beta, there are many stability and security problems with it. I would recommend against using it as your primary browser, for the moment at least, until the final release comes out.

So it really depends on what kind of person you are and what type of computer you have. You can’t go wrong with IE or FF, but under stress, they perform slowly, Opera is a boring looking browser but can run where the other two can’t, Safari has problems with rendering many webpages and there are far too many security risks with Chrome, but is much the fastest of them all. I personally use all five of them (but IE and Safari are my main two) and have no problem with any of them.

During an interview is it alright to negotiate for work timings?

I have an interview (yeah you said I will do it fans and I did so thank you guys) and its as AVP – Operations tomorrow at 10 PM. They told me the work timings will be from 9 to 6.30 which I think is a bit off the line… 9 am work? That is so out of line!!

Can I negotiate timing? I would like to report at 10 am and then work however long but its the morning time frame which brings me down but dont ask about the pay! It beats my current job twice ! and the modeling comes as bonus! LOL
Your hypocritical answers dont help, not unless you know what you are talking about…. but this is because there is something called Negotiations, which most Directors, Vice Presidents, General Managers and the liked are trained on… Anyways thank you !!

A first interview is just not a good time to negotiate things. There are some issues associated with hiring that you want to put off until after you have made a good impression and made the person on the other side of the desk want to hire you.
Depending on the size of the company, the person who does your first interview may not even be the one who makes decisions on these things. (I had to interview with 4 different people before a decision was made to hire me and if I had objected to the start time with the first interviewer, I would have never made it to the 4th person who was the actual decision maker).
I would go in and impress them by showing them what a hard worker you are and the things you have accomplished at jobs in the past. It’s a very competitive job market right now and I guarantee they have 4 people lined who would love the job, no matter what the hours. It doesn’t hurt to ask if the hours are flexible, but you aren’t in a position to negotiate yet.
When a job offer is made, you are in a position to come back to them with a counter offer before you accept. That is the time to negotiate for a later start time. By that time, they will have already decided they like you and want to hire you, and they will also have invested in you. They will be more receptive to making a concession on work times.

For the record, some technology fields are much more flexible about start times (my boyfriend is a computer programmer who doesn’t start until noon, but he also works 50 hours a week and sometimes works through the night). It all depends on how collaborative your work is going to be, and also if your business is on the west coast and you work with people on the east coast, it will be harder for them to let you come in later (because of the time difference).

4. Human Resources – organize company’s people, hire them, fire them, train them, analyze them, etc.

5. Finance/Accounting – you can be a financial planner, accountant, stock investing person, whatever… These people help other people manage their money and do things with it. You have to be really smart with money for people to trust you with theirs.

Jobs That Might Struggle

1. Psychology/Counseling – why see a therapist when you have Yahoo answers?; but people are lonelier than ever these days and life is stressful; so depression, anxiety and stressful things are going to keep going up. Plus, drug companies for these medications make a shitload of money selling this crap and they need psychiatrists to prescribe it to people whose problems can really be solved with time.

2. Entrepreneurship – Probably will struggle since big companies look like they’re taking over the world, but if you look hard enough this is where the money might be.

Jobs I’m Not Sure About

1. Law – Since schools are getting dumber and religion is going down, and half of parents are divorced, people are losing good role models to teach about right and wrong so there might be a lot of jobs, BUT there are too many lawyers without jobs right now.
